Tandem Switching ApplicationTandem switches handle traffic passed between end offices, or beyond the local calling area. Although these switches are critically important to avoiding direct connectivity between all end offices, they are expensive and are not connected to revenue generating subscribers or new services. As an alternative to using tandem switches, the packet network is ideal for traffic transport between end offices. Packet voice solutions allow you to pass voice traffic over existing data networks that are far less expensive than legacy tandem platforms. They also provide a straightforward migration path toward a more extensive use of packet networks for voice services.
